Wonderland Tarot
by Christopher John Abbey and Morgana
Abbey
This is a wonderful,
surprisingly apt tarot deck that captures all the childlike wisdom and
joy of the books by Lewis Carroll. The impressions are taken from
both Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass and
the illustrations by Sir John Tenniel in both of those publications have
served as an inspiration to the designer and artist of this deck.
The symbolic imagery
is based on the Rider-Waite interpretation of the tarot, so it is quite
traditional in nature. A lot of changes have been made to the deck
in accordance with the theme involved, but they are all consistent.
Those familiar with the Rider-Waite will recognize many elements of that
deck here.
The card size is
smaller than standard, making the deck shuffle easily and handle well by
just about anyone, even children. The Major Arcana cards bear the
traditional titling and order. The Minor Arcana suits have all been
renamed; they are now Hats, Flamingos, Peppermills and Oysters. The
courts are the traditional King, Queen, Knight and Page.
While the symbolism
follows a specific theme, it isn't part of a deck-book set, and doesn't
require a specific system to work with. There is a little white booklet
included but any Rider-Waite knowledge is used in good stead here.
This is a very cute
collectible and can also be used with children quite well. One does
not need to be advanced to read with it. The art is rather good in
a style reminiscent of Victorian-age children's books. I recommend
this deck highly.
