The Power Deck
by Lynn V. Andrews
illustrations by Rob Schouten

This is not a tarot deck, but it is a lovely oracular system which emphasizes self-esteem as a personal goal for the person using it.  The paintings which are used to illustrate this deck are absolutely breathtaking!  I have seen a few on greeting cards, and at least one has graced the cover of a catalog I receive, but whether they were on the deck first or on the greeting cards and catalog covers I don't know.

There are 45 cards altogether in the deck.  There are no Major or Minor Arcana, no suits of any kind.  Just 45 cards, numbered 1 through 45.  The front of the card has the illustration, and the back of the card has a meditation to do when you are focusing on the card.  This comes only as a deck-and-book set, and enclosed in the set is a little cardboard stand-up thingy which has blue skies and clouds printed on it, the idea being to display the chosen card against this backdrop in order to meditate upon it.

The book is nice, but not illustrated, and I think the cards are the best part of the set.  Often the book is of more value, but in this case it doesn't offer a whole lot that you can't get from reading the card backs.  Out of 125 pages, only 18 are
dedicated to "how to use the Power Deck cards" and the whole rest of the book is about the cards themselves.  Each page describing a card in detail has two sections, one of which is an exact verbatim copy of what is on the back of the cards. An exercise in working with fear, a prayer, and a sacred self wheel spread are among the few things that grace the earlier part of the book.

For the artwork alone I wanted to get this set.  If it were possible to buy just the cards I think everyone would do just that, therefore it is available only as a set.  I do very much like the system of card meditation which is used here, the explanations are very nice and the artwork transformative.  I do recommend this deck for meditative work.
