This deck-and-book set is an excellent tool for personal discovery, using Native American spirit animal teachings. While it is not a tarot, it nonetheless is one of the most popular decks available today. The newest version, Medicine Cards -- Just For Today, features a pocket-sized deck of the same cards, only with the meditations for the day printed right on them.
The book which comes with the set is a hardbound edition chock full of information on how to use this system for personal enrichment and transformation using the concept of native totem animals and their related teachings. The cards themselves are large, longer than standard, but not difficult to shuffle. There are 44 cards which feature shield designs with the totem animal on the shield, and nine cards come with the set with a blank shield design, in case you have a personal favorite animal which is not included with the set.
The book provides clear and interesting meditations on each card and the lesson we learn from the animal mentor it portrays. While there are several spreads included in the book, you may also use the cards by drawing one card and meditating on the lesson included for that animal. This is the idea behind the cards Just For Today as well.
Other sections in the book include a piece on the 9 totem animals themselves and some suggested reading. All of the information included is pertinent to the Medicine Cards themselves and their use. This system is complete within itself. The Medicine Cards -- Just For Today can be used in tandem with the Medicine Cards system, or by themselves.
I recommend this system to anyone who is looking to work with spirit animals in personal transformation work. It will be of interest to anyone who follows Native American teachings. Collectors may like this as well.
