This is a very pretty deck, rather Victorian in its looks. The concept here is that Amy Zerner makes what she calls "tapestries" out of fabric and applique and she literally creates the picture of each tarot scene out of fabric, ribbons and embroidery, and then these are committed to the card in the form of printing.
The result is absolutely smashing. I think that someone who has worked with fabrics and is aware of the amount of work and the incredible detail will appreciate the beauty of these cards more than someone who just looks at the pictures. Fans of Victoriana will also love them.
Due to the nature of the elements involved in making this tarot, the pictures do have a two-dimensional quality to them and some cards are really flat-looking. The deck itself is larger than standard and thicker card stock is used, making the deck feel really large in the reader's hands. Some people would like this, however, I felt it made them difficult to shuffle.
The suits for the Minor Arcana are Hearts, Swords, Wands and Pentacles. Court cards are Princess, Prince, Queen and King. Everything is consistent with Victorian style.
The deck is available as a deck-and-book-set only. The book is set up in such a way as to be helpful to accomplished readers gain more insight into the tarot. I don't feel that beginners would get as much from this set. However, it is a lovely deck for the advanced reader, or the collector of Victoriana.
